Stone Axe/Sun Gods in Exile – Split 7” Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com) Hydro-Phonic Records Release date: 2010
Uber-prolific retro rockers Stone Axe return with another slice of 7” vinyl, this time with classic rock revivalists Sun Gods in Exile. But before we hear what Portland, Maine has to say, let's take a spin through the Washington state band's latest.
“On with the Show” is vintage Stone Axe, in that it reminds you of vintage someone else without being a direct re-write. Make no mistake, for all their indebtedness to the greats of yore, Stone Axe has its own voice. “On with the Show” is a sunnier song than their last couple of offerings, with a bright chorus that's about as welcome as a six pack of ice cold beer. It's not their strongest number (that would still be “Ain't Gonna Miss It” from their Extended Play release), but it does an impeccable job of reminding you how awesome Stone Axe - and Foghat - can be.
Sun Gods in Exile impressed the hell out of me with their Black Light White Lines full-length and with “Tuscon,” they show no sign of of a creative slow down. Like “On with the Show,” this is a more light-hearted number, despite guitarist Tony D'Agostino's ability to shoehorn in a blistering solo wherever he can. Put it this way – it's a colder than a witch's tit day today, but Sun Gods made it a little warmer, thanks to this ditty. Or better yet, consider “Tuscon” the convertible muscle car that goes along with that ice cold six pack. Sure, that's not very responsible, but good rock n roll never is. Recommended.
